The government is shifting funds to support important rail projects across the nation. A total of $5 billion will be available, with a large portion coming from money previously set aside for California’s high-speed rail project.
The new plan, called the National Railroad Partnership Program, will focus on safety and improvements for passengers. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the program will avoid “radical DEI and green grant requirements” that were part of previous plans. He criticized California’s rail project as a waste of money.
Instead of prioritizing climate change initiatives, the new program will focus on projects in communities with strong families, as measured by birth and marriage rates. There will also be an emphasis on making railroad crossings safer for drivers and pedestrians.
The administration also aims to improve the travel experience for families by adding things like nursing rooms, bigger waiting areas, and play areas in train stations.
California officials have expressed disagreement with the decision to redirect funds from their rail project and are taking legal action. However, the government believes these funds can be better used to improve rail travel and safety for people all over the country.
