Donald Trump has responded strongly following the resignation of Special Counsel Jack Smith, calling him a “disgrace” to both himself and the nation. Smith’s departure from the Justice Department was confirmed in a court filing, which stated that his official duties concluded after he submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025.
On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with Smith’s investigations into him, stating, “Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100 million on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty-handed!”
Jack Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to look into Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol events and his handling of classified documents. Prior to this role, Smith served as acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee during the Trump administration.
This resignation comes just as Smith’s report regarding Trump’s involvement in the Capitol events is expected to be released soon. Garland had indicated his commitment to making the report public to the extent allowed by law and departmental policy, even as a federal appeals court recently ruled against obstructing the report’s release.
Following Trump’s election victory in November, Smith has filed motions to conclude the cases against him, even asking to dismiss charges related to the Capitol riot. Trump has stated that these cases were lawless and politically motivated, declaring them a result of a “political hijacking.”
As the nation looks forward to the future under Trump’s leadership, the conclusion of this investigation marks a significant moment in ongoing political dialogues. Trump remains focused on his agenda, promising to “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
