A Republican lawmaker, Rep. Brandon Gill from Texas, is set to introduce legislation that aims to honor former President Donald Trump by featuring his likeness on the $100 bill. This announcement comes as a show of support for Trump’s enduring impact on the nation.
Rep. Gill emphasized that despite the opportunity to relax in retirement, Trump continues to work hard for the American people. He highlighted Trump’s efforts to secure the nation’s borders, achieve energy independence, and enhance trade relationships, all while prioritizing American interests over foreign aid.
The proposed legislation would call on the treasury secretary to design the new note with Trump’s image, aiming for its release by 2029. Gill believes that replacing Benjamin Franklin with Trump is a fitting tribute to his accomplishments and the impact he will continue to have in the coming years.
This initiative follows a similar proposal by Rep. Joe Wilson that seeks to place Trump’s face on a new $250 bill, which has already gathered support from several other conservative members of Congress.
However, changing images on U.S. currency is a complex process. The last significant change happened in 1929 when Andrew Jackson replaced Grover Cleveland on the $20 bill. Moreover, current U.S. laws would need to be amended because living individuals cannot currently be featured on currency.
Both the Trump and Biden administrations have previously navigated efforts concerning currency changes, with plans to replace Jackson’s image with that of Harriet Tubman stalling during Trump’s presidency. The Biden administration has since revived the effort, but it remains incomplete.
