Former President Donald Trump expressed his enthusiasm for the United States potentially joining the British Commonwealth. He shared his thoughts on Truth Social following a report suggesting that King Charles III might extend an offer for the U.S. to achieve associate membership during Trump’s upcoming state visit to Britain.
“I love King Charles,” Trump stated, showing his support for the idea. He reposted the article regarding this inquiry, indicating enjoyment for the possible connection.
The British Commonwealth, established in 1926, consists of 56 nations, including Australia and Canada. Most of these countries were once part of the British Empire. The Commonwealth allows for voluntary membership. Historically, the United States was part of the British Empire until achieving independence.
Trump, who had a cordial relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II, spoke favorably about her, recalling their interactions. He described her reign of 75 years as remarkable and noted her success without mistakes. Trump also holds respect for King Charles and Prince William but has not been as complimentary towards Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The idea of U.S. membership in the Commonwealth was discussed during Trump’s first term, with hopes that it might help ease trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada. A representative from the Royal Commonwealth Society commented that this initiative would signify the strong ties between Britain and the U.S., reflecting the mutual respect both nations have for each other.
Trump has acknowledged receiving an invitation for a second state visit from King Charles, reinforcing the importance of their relationship. Trump remarked on the strength of the bonds between the two countries and expressed excitement for honoring the king and the UK.
As discussions continue, many hope this potential move would enhance the role of the Commonwealth on the global stage.
