Trump Welcomes First American Pope: A Historical Moment for the U.S.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump expressed his congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost after the cardinal was elected as Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant moment for the United States. Trump described it as "a great honor" that an American-born cardinal has now become the leader of the Catholic Church.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump shared his excitement, saying, "What a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!"
At a White House briefing, Trump mentioned that he was "a little surprised" by the selection but emphasized how monumental this election is for American Catholics. "What greater honor could there be?" he asked reporters, signaling the pride many Americans may feel at this historic event. The Trump administration is reportedly already in contact with the Vatican about future meetings.
Vice President JD Vance also congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his selection, expressing hopes for his success in leading the Church. Vance noted, "I’m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church."
Pope Leo XIV, who hails from Chicago, previously served as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and has now taken on the immense responsibility of guiding the Catholic faithful worldwide. In his introductory address, he called upon Catholics to live as missionaries and work towards building peace among all people.
This election is not only a milestone for the Catholic Church but also a reflection of America’s growing influence on global religious leadership. As the nation looks forward, the hope is that Pope Leo XIV will bring a spirit of dialogue and unity to the Church and beyond.
