Venezuelan Leader Visits White House Amidst Shifting U.S. Policy
WASHINGTON – Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado met with President Trump at the White House on Thursday to discuss the future of Venezuela. This meeting occurs after U.S. forces apprehended Nicolás Maduro in a military operation.
The Trump administration appears to be open to working with Delcy Rodríguez, who served as Maduro’s vice president and is now acting president. This move signals a potential shift in U.S. strategy, possibly sidelining Machado, who has been a prominent voice against the socialist regime.
Machado requested the meeting with President Trump. It comes after her party’s victory in the 2024 elections, results rejected by Maduro’s allies. She has also offered to share her Nobel Peace Prize with President Trump.
Following her meeting with President Trump, Machado plans to meet with senators, a move reflecting her efforts to build bipartisan support.
These events follow the U.S. military’s seizure of an oil tanker linked to Venezuela, as part of a broader effort to control the nation’s oil resources after Maduro’s capture. Maduro and his wife face drug trafficking charges in New York.
The White House reports that Venezuela is cooperating with the U.S. government since Maduro’s removal. Rodríguez has expressed a willingness to work with the U.S., releasing political prisoners and signaling a departure from Maduro’s policies.
President Trump described his recent conversation with Rodríguez as “great,” suggesting a positive development in relations between the two countries.
Despite this, President Trump has expressed reservations about Machado’s leadership potential, questioning her level of support within Venezuela.
Machado has attempted to maintain a positive relationship with President Trump, especially after winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
Machado, an industrial engineer, has been challenging the ruling party since 2004. She has faced accusations and hostility from the previous Chávez regime for her activism and meetings with American leaders like President George W. Bush.
She led efforts to remove Maduro from power, though the 2024 election results were disputed by many due to credible evidence to the contrary.
