President Trump Launches Peace Initiative at Davos
Davos, Switzerland – President Donald Trump introduced his new Board of Peace on Thursday, securing signatures from leaders around the globe who are committed to finding a lasting peace in Gaza.
The president unveiled the board during a speech and signing ceremony at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“Once this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do. And we’ll do it in conjunction with the United Nations,” President Trump stated. He emphasized the global focus of the initiative, saying, “This isn’t the United States, this is for the world. I think we can spread it out to other things as we succeed in Gaza.”
President Trump noted that the majority of the 59 leaders who signed the agreement are “very popular.”
However, some nations have chosen not to participate. Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed interest but has not yet committed, stating that Moscow is discussing membership with its “strategic partners.” The United Kingdom is also hesitant, citing concerns about the legal treaty and President Putin’s potential involvement.
“And we do also have concerns about President Putin being part of something which is talking about peace, when we have still not seen any signs from Putin that there will be a commitment to peace in Ukraine,” U.K. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told the BBC.
Norway, Sweden, and France have also declined membership, with French officials expressing worries that the board might overshadow the U.N.’s role in resolving conflicts. President Trump has previously suggested that the board could potentially make the U.N. obsolete.
During his remarks in Davos, President Trump adopted a more diplomatic tone, assuring attendees that the board would work “in conjunction with the United Nations.”
Canada and China have also not yet signed on to the board.
