Trump Supports Redskins Name
Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his belief that Washington’s NFL team should have kept its original name, the Redskins. Speaking to reporters, Trump said if he owned the team, he “wouldn’t have changed the name” because it carries a certain pride and tradition.
Currently, the team is known as the Washington Commanders. Trump remarked that “Commanders just doesn’t have the same ring to it.” He suggested that winning could make any name sound good, especially considering the team’s recent success in reaching the NFC Championship Game with new quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Josh Harris, the owner of the Commanders, confirmed that despite plans to move the team back to its historical roots at the old RFK Stadium site, the name change was here to stay. He defended the Commanders’ brand, claiming it resonates well with the military culture of Washington D.C., which has the largest military presence in the country. Harris mentioned that the team is focused on moving forward under this new identity.
Political discussions have emerged over the $3.8 billion project for a new stadium, with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighting potential delays caused by the city council. She warned that any changes made to the stadium agreement could jeopardize the deal with the Commanders.
While Washington has shifted away from the Redskins name due to pressure surrounding its perceived insensitivity, there remains a strong faction within the community advocating for its return. Some, like Senator Steve Daines from Montana, have voiced their support, emphasizing that the name honors Native American culture.
As negotiations about the name and logo continue, it seems there is potential for the Commanders to honor their rich history while also addressing the concerns of various stakeholders.
Construction for the new stadium is aimed to begin in 2027, with an anticipated opening in 2030.
