President-elect Trump is contemplating a trip to China as he prepares to take office. Reports indicate that discussions with his advisors about a potential visit are already underway.
Trump, who will be inaugurated on Monday, previously visited Beijing during his first term in 2017. Just ahead of his inauguration, he had a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. During the conversation, Trump expressed a desire to enhance relations between the two nations, despite previously imposing tariffs on China.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described his call with Xi as productive, expressing optimism about addressing a range of issues, including trade, drug trafficking, and social media platforms. He stated, “We will solve many problems together… President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safe.”
While specific plans for an in-person visit to China were not disclosed, sources suggest that Trump is considering it within his first 100 days. Additionally, there’s also a possibility that President Xi could make a visit to the White House, marking a significant diplomatic gesture.
At his upcoming inauguration, Xi was invited but will be represented by Vice President Han Zheng, signaling a noteworthy first in U.S.-China relations. This relationship has seen ups and downs, but both leaders seem committed to establishing better communication moving forward.
Alongside plans for China, Trump has floated the idea of a trip to India, showing an eagerness to strengthen ties with key nations globally. As Trump steps into his presidency, the focus on international relationships will likely be a top priority.
