Trump Calls for Peace Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine
Washington, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump voiced rare criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, urging him to immediately halt attacks on Kyiv, Ukraine, which have recently intensified. In a post on his social media platform, Trump stated, “I am not happy with the Russian strikes on Kyiv. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5,000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!”
This call for peace comes after a significant attack where Russian forces launched a lengthy barrage of missiles and drones on Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 people and injuries to around 90. This has been described as the deadliest assault on the city since July of the previous year.
Trump’s frustration stems from the stalled progress in negotiations aimed at establishing peace between Ukraine and Russia. He has expressed discontent with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing him of extending the conflict by refusing to concede territories, including the Crimea Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
Zelenskyy has been firm in his refusal to acknowledge any occupied territory as Russian, asserting that this would cross a significant red line for Ukraine. He pointed out that Ukraine had already accepted a U.S. ceasefire proposal 44 days prior as an initial step toward peace, but Russian attacks have continued unabated.
Trump’s comments on Putin mark a shift, given that he has previously hinted that Russia might be more inclined to reach an agreement than Ukraine. He mentioned in a press conference, “I thought it might be easier to deal with Zelenskyy. So far it’s been harder.”
While he navigates the complexities of international diplomacy, Trump continues to assess the balance of power between the two leaders. He has often indicated that Putin holds more leverage in the situation, while urging cooperation rather than aggression.
In related news, Trump is scheduled to meet with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, along with other topics including U.S. trade policies. Norway, a NATO member, shares a border with Russia and has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine during this conflict. Støre emphasized the importance of U.S.-Norwegian relations in pursuing a long-lasting peace in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the rising tensions, imploring Putin to stop perpetuating false claims about desiring peace while continuing military actions against Ukraine. Macron underscored that the focus should remain on the responsibilities of President Putin regarding the war.
As the war rages on, various international leaders are highlighting the necessity of negotiations, while also cautioning against allowing Russia’s aggressive strategies to dictate the terms of any potential agreement. The conflict continues to draw global attention as the situation evolves.
