Trump Calls for Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia
In a recent statement, former President Donald Trump revealed he communicated with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand, urging them to establish a ceasefire amid ongoing hostilities. He emphasized that the United States will hold off on resuming trade negotiations with these countries until the fighting comes to an end.
During a call with Cambodia’s Prime Minister and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister, Trump expressed hope for both nations to quickly reach an agreement on peace. He noted, “Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also eager to return to the ‘Trading Table’ with the United States, which we think is inappropriate until the violence ceases.”
Trump praised the rich history and culture of both countries and expressed his honor in engaging with them. He looks forward to finalizing trade agreements once peace is restored.
The border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has escalated tragically, with at least 33 fatalities reported and 168,000 individuals displaced from their homes. Tensions flared after a landmine incident reportedly injured several Thai soldiers, leading both nations to accuse each other of provoking the conflict.
As a response to the unrest, Thailand has closed its border with Cambodia and both sides have recalled their diplomats.
Cambodia’s government recently reported more casualties, including both civilians and soldiers during the ongoing skirmishes. The United Nations Security Council has called for de-escalation, urging both nations to prioritize peace.
Thai officials stressed their commitment to resolving the conflict peacefully according to international law, urging Cambodia to sincerely engage in negotiations. However, discussions may be stalled until Cambodia curtails its military actions.
This situation calls for urgent attention to the safety of civilians caught in the crossfire, highlighting the need for diplomatic efforts that truly protect those affected.
