President Donald Trump recently expressed his views on the legacy of the late President Jimmy Carter, stating that Carter could find comfort in knowing he wasn’t the worst president in U.S. history; that unenviable title, according to Trump, belongs to current President Joe Biden.
During a press conference alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who was visiting the White House to discuss a potential trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, Trump made his comments clear. He told reporters, “Worst administration in the history of our country. Worse than Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter died a happy man. You know why? Because he wasn’t the worst. President Joe Biden was.”
Trump has consistently pointed out what he perceives as Biden’s lack of mental fitness. His remarks come in light of recent publications focusing on Biden’s cognitive abilities during his presidency. Notably, a book titled “Uncharted: How Trump Beat Biden, Harris, and the Odds in the Wildest Campaign in History,” released shortly before Trump’s comments, suggests that Biden’s aides even isolated him, allowing his mental sharpness to decline.
This exchange of criticisms comes shortly after Biden accused the Trump administration of inflicting significant damage to the country during its early days. In a speech delivered at a disability advocacy conference in Chicago, he lamented, “Fewer than 100 days, this administration has done so much damage and so much destruction. It’s kind of breathtaking it could happen that soon.”
On a more promising note, during the same press conference, Trump and Meloni voiced optimism regarding the progress of trade negotiations between the U.S. and Europe. Trump, who had earlier announced a 20% tariff on European Union goods, deferred the increase to 10% for 90 days, hoping to encourage a fair trade deal. He stated confidently, “There will be a trade deal, 100%. Of course there will be a trade deal; they want to make one very much, and we’re going to make a trade deal. I fully expect it, but it’ll be a fair deal.”
