President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his support for House Speaker Mike Johnson as he gears up to maintain his leadership position among Republicans in Congress. In a recent post on his social media network, Trump described Johnson as “a good, hard-working, religious man” and assured his followers that Johnson “will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN.” He further confirmed that Johnson has his “Complete & Total Endorsement.”
Johnson has faced some challenges in his role, especially after a conflict over federal funding that brought the threat of a government shutdown before Christmas. Even though a last-minute agreement was reached, the situation revealed some limitations in Johnson’s influence and highlighted divisions within his party.
In his efforts to preserve his leadership, Johnson has worked to stay aligned with Trump’s vision. He has reassured Trump that he will fulfill promises regarding raising the debt ceiling by 2025. For a time, Trump remained silent on Johnson’s standing before a leadership vote set for January 3, even as certain Republicans hinted at their reluctance to support Johnson.
Among those voicing concern is Rep. Victoria Spartz from Indiana, a former opponent of Kevin McCarthy’s initial bid for the speakership. In a statement, Spartz emphasized that the next speaker must demonstrate bold leadership to guide the country back on the right track, insisting on significant reforms in spending as a part of the next leader’s agenda.
