Trump Endorses Ashley Hinson for Iowa Senate Seat
Former President Donald Trump endorsed Republican Representative Ashley Hinson in her bid to succeed retiring Senator Joni Ernst in Iowa. Hinson, a third-term representative, launched her Senate campaign recently, emphasizing her commitment to support Trump’s policies.
In her announcement, Hinson expressed her intention to be “President Trump’s top ally in the United States Senate.” She proudly declared her alignment with Trump, who praised her in a social media post, stating, “I know Ashley well, and she is a WINNER!” He highlighted her dedication to Iowa and her role as a loving mother and wife.
Hinson’s Senate campaign received additional support from Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). Thune remarked, “We need conservative fighters in the Senate, and that’s exactly what we’ll get with Ashley Hinson.” NRSC Chair Tim Scott of South Carolina added that Hinson is the strong leader Iowa needs to advocate for Trump’s agenda in 2026 and beyond.
While she is currently considered the frontrunner, Hinson will face competition in the GOP primary from former state Senator Jim Carlin and veteran Joshua Smith. However, Trump’s endorsement is a significant asset, likely discouraging other challengers from entering the race.
Joni Ernst, who announced her decision not to seek re-election after much contemplation, has been a prominent figure in Iowa politics since her 2014 election. In her farewell video, she reflected on her accomplishments, noting her efforts to cut waste in the federal government.
Hinson expressed gratitude for Ernst’s service and highlighted key issues for her campaign, including securing borders, championing women’s sports, lowering taxes, and supporting Iowa’s agriculture sector.
As she embarks on her campaign, Hinson is committed to visiting all 99 counties in Iowa. She has already garnered endorsements from other Republican lawmakers and leaders, showcasing a growing network of support.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee criticized Hinson’s candidacy, claiming she has made decisions that negatively impact Iowans. In response, Hinson firmly dismissed these claims, arguing that they reflect the left’s lack of a coherent message and leadership.
Iowa has shifted toward a more conservative stance in recent elections, with Republicans currently holding both Senate seats and all congressional districts in the state. However, Democrats are motivated after winning two GOP-held seats in recent special elections.
As Hinson gears up for her Senate run, the political landscape in Iowa suggests a competitive race that will be closely watched as the Republican Party aims to maintain and expand its majority in the Senate in the upcoming elections.
