Peter Navarro has been appointed as the Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing in Donald Trump’s upcoming second administration, as announced by the President-elect on Wednesday.
In his announcement, Trump shared on Truth Social that Navarro, 75, will play a critical role in advancing and communicating key aspects of the Trump Manufacturing, Tariff, and Trade Agendas. Navarro previously served as a key trade advisor during Trump’s first term.
Navarro has faced legal challenges, including a conviction for contempt of Congress due to his failure to comply with a subpoena linked to the investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident. He was sentenced to nearly four months in federal jail in Miami. Shortly after his release on July 17, he gave a noteworthy speech at the Republican National Convention, which was well-received.
Trump has expressed strong support for Navarro, stating he was mistreated by the government and its institutions. He praised Navarro as a dedicated advocate for his policies centered around the principles of “Buy American, Hire American.”
Throughout his career, Navarro has been a consistent supporter of protectionist trade measures, reflecting Trump’s skepticism towards global trade agreements and his emphasis on tariffs as a means to boost American jobs and manufacturing.
As the new administration prepares to take office, Navarro’s appointment signals a commitment to these core economic principles that aim to prioritize American interests in trade policy.
