U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, indicated on Sunday that President Trump is expected to have a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Witkoff was questioned about the timeline for a potential resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Witkoff expressed optimism, stating, “The president mentions weeks as a possible timeframe, and I share that hope. We are seeing progress more quickly than anticipated, and while the situation is complex, we are making strides in bridging the gap between the two sides.” He emphasized that many important discussions still lie ahead, yet he forecasts a constructive dialogue between the two leaders this week.
During his recent meeting with Putin in Moscow, Witkoff spent three to four hours discussing potential solutions, describing the talks as “positive” and “focused on solutions.” He noted that prior to this engagement, substantial differences existed between the U.S. and Russia, but the gap has notably narrowed, thanks in part to discussions that recently took place in Saudi Arabia with U.S. and Ukrainian officials.
Witkoff mentioned that he kept President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other key staff updated following his discussions with the Russian leader. He underscored Trump’s active involvement in every step of the negotiations, stating, “The president is receiving real-time updates on developments and is a central figure in all significant decisions.”
He also highlighted the importance of discussing four key regions related to the potential ceasefire and reinforced that talks are ongoing involving Ukraine, European nations, and Russia. Witkoff’s recent travels also included mediation efforts between Israel and Hamas, illustrating his extensive involvement in international dialogues.
Overall, there is a sense of cautious optimism regarding the possibility of peace talks and the direction they may take in the coming days.
