Senator Pushes for Stronger English Skills for Truck Drivers
Washington, D.C. – A Republican Senator is working to make sure truck drivers on our roads can speak and understand English well. Senator Cynthia Lummis from Wyoming wants to bring back tougher rules that were loosened a few years ago.
Senator Lummis says it’s important for safety. Her plan would make sure drivers can talk to people, understand road signs, and fill out reports in English. If they can’t, they wouldn’t be allowed to drive.
“Wyoming families and travelers deserve safe highways,” Lummis said. “I’m introducing this commonsense legislation to ensure commercial truck drivers operating heavy vehicles can simply read signs, understand traffic laws and communicate effectively with law enforcement and emergency responders.”
This comes after President Trump also called for stronger English rules. The idea is that everyone on the road is safer if truck drivers can clearly understand what’s happening around them.
The Obama administration changed the rules, so drivers who didn’t speak English well only got a warning. Senator Lummis wants to go back to the old way, where they wouldn’t be allowed to drive until they improved their English.
A similar plan is also being discussed in the House of Representatives. Both plans are named after Connor Dzion, who died in a traffic accident in Florida.
