U.S. Embassy Issues Warning in Trinidad and Tobago
Port-of-Spain, Trinidad – The American Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago has advised U.S. citizens to avoid American government buildings throughout the holiday weekend.
The warning comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Venezuela, especially after recent U.S. military actions in the Caribbean aimed at stopping drug trafficking.
Embassy officials didn’t give a specific reason for the alert but mentioned a “heightened state of alert.” Monday is Diwali, an important Hindu holiday in Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad is close to Venezuela. Recent reports say that fishermen near the coast are missing after a U.S. operation last Tuesday.
According to Trinidad and Tobago’s Homeland Security Minister, Roger Alexander, the alert is based on threats against Americans in the Caribbean nation. U.S. authorities believe these threats “could be linked” to ongoing regional tensions, though details remain unclear.
Local authorities in Trinidad and Tobago say they are taking steps to ensure security in response to these threats.
U.S. officials have stated that suspected drug traffickers are unlawful combatants and must be stopped with military force.
