UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was tragically killed in a targeted shooting in New York City on December 4. He was remembered as a devoted father and a respected leader.
Thompson, 50, is survived by his wife, Paulette “Pauley” Thompson, and their two children, who live in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Pauley is a physical therapist with Park Nicollet Health Services and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Master’s in Physical Therapy in 1999, just like Brian.
Family members described Thompson as a caring father. His sister-in-law, Elena Reveiz, expressed her sadness, stating he was a “good person.”
The shooting occurred outside the New York Hilton Midtown around 6:45 a.m. The police described it as a “brazen, targeted” attack. They reported that the assailant had been waiting outside for Thompson, who was staying in a hotel across the street. The gunman fired several shots, hitting Thompson from behind before fleeing on an electric Citi Bike towards Central Park.
Despite police efforts, the shooter remains at large. In a statement, UnitedHealthcare expressed shock at Thompson’s death, emphasizing his role as a valued colleague and friend. The company is cooperating with the New York Police Department during this investigation.
Pauley Thompson revealed that her husband had received threats prior to his death, although details about the nature of these threats were unclear. She is focusing on comforting their children during this difficult time.
The incident highlights both the personal tragedy for Thompson’s family and the broader issues surrounding safety. Thompson had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and became CEO in April 2021, following leadership roles in various divisions. His sudden passing has left a significant impact on his colleagues and the community.
