Comedian Steve Treviño believes Hollywood may be turning its back on him because of his traditional American values.
Treviño, known for jokes about family, faith, and love of country, questioned why he hasn’t received another offer from Netflix after his recent special, “Steve Treviño: Simple Man,” did well on the platform.
“Hollywood doesn’t like us,” Treviño said, expressing his disappointment. He believes his focus on family-friendly content and his conservative beliefs may be the reason why.
Treviño’s special focused on his family life, marriage, being a parent, and his Christian faith. He was surprised that Netflix didn’t offer him another deal, especially since his special ranked high among comedy shows. Netflix keeps its viewing numbers private, but Treviño said his special did better than many others released at the same time.
“I was in the top five,” he said. “I beat a lot of them. But those I beat are getting new offers, and I’m not.”
Treviño pointed out that many comedy specials came out around the same time, and some comedians whose specials didn’t do as well are getting more opportunities. This made him wonder if his political views are playing a role.
“You have to ask why,” Treviño said. “Whether you like me or not, I sell tickets. The numbers are there.”
He also shared an experience with Amazon Prime Video, where he was asked to remove a thank you to U.S. military members from one of his projects.
“They said thanking the troops was too political,” Treviño explained. “I don’t understand how thanking our service members is political.”
Treviño is standing firm on his principles. “I promote family, I promote God, I promote loving this country,” he said. Despite the challenges, Treviño is moving forward with new projects, including a sitcom and an animated show. He’s also focused on his stand-up career, which he says “pays the bills.”
“If Netflix doesn’t want to give us another offer, we’ll figure it out,” Treviño said, showing his determination to continue his career on his own terms. He’s currently working on another stand-up special that will continue to reflect his core values. “I’m proud of it,” he said. “It promotes family, promotes God, promotes love for this country.”
