Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has turned down a crucial minerals agreement with the United States on two separate occasions. In an interview, Bessent expressed his concerns about Zelenskyy’s decisions, describing them as significant diplomatic errors.
During a meeting in Kyiv, Zelenskyy informed Bessent that he would not sign a deal that would provide Ukraine with billions in U.S. aid in exchange for rare earth minerals and other valuable resources. This refusal extended to Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as well.
Bessent remarked on the unfortunate nature of the situation, stating, “This has to be one of the greatest diplomatic mishaps of all time by President Zelenskyy.” He emphasized the lost opportunity, considering it a major blunder in diplomatic relations.
The tensions escalated when President Trump and Vice President Vance publicly criticized Zelenskyy, which resulted in a canceled meeting. Bessent referred to this as “one of the biggest own goals in diplomatic history,” reminiscent of a soccer term where a player scores against their own team.
Senator Eric Schmitt from Missouri weighed in on social media, suggesting that Zelenskyy missed a critical opportunity when he could have finalized the deal days earlier, preferring instead to seek a meeting at the White House. Schmitt characterized Zelenskyy’s approach as antagonistic, stating, “He had a one foot putt but was more interested in litigating issues that should be discussed behind closed doors.”
In the aftermath, Trump expressed disappointment, suggesting that Zelenskyy was “not ready for Peace.” He reflected on the meeting as meaningful, implying that valuable insights were gained despite the challenges.
In contrast, Zelenskyy thanked the American people for their support during his visit, reaffirming his commitment to seeking a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
The situation highlights the complexities of international diplomacy and the importance of clear communication and cooperation between allies.
