Community in Mourning After Shooting Claims Life of Teen
A tragic incident has left a Louisiana community heartbroken following the death of a high school volleyball player at a house party shooting. McKenzie Rideau, a 16-year-old student, was killed on May 20 during a gathering in Lake Charles.
Police confirmed that the shooting occurred in a residential area near Central Parkway and Overhill Drive. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of gunshots shortly after midnight, believing the party was connected to recent high school graduations.
Rideau was remembered fondly by her family and school community. Principal Freddie L. Harrison III of Lake Charles College Prep expressed deep sorrow over her loss, stating, “McKenzie was not just a student; she was a light in our school.” He highlighted her energy and enthusiasm as a member of the volleyball team and flag line, which inspired those around her.
In a social media statement, Harrison praised Rideau’s kindness and ability to make everyone feel welcome and accepted. “Let’s honor her memory by leading with kindness, love, and unity,” he encouraged the community.
A neighbor recalled the chaos of the shooting, describing the sound as resembling fireworks, followed by screams and people fleeing the scene. Authorities reported that the gathering had around 30 to 50 attendees, aged between 16 and 22.
Lake Charles Police are actively investigating the incident. Chief Shawn Caldwell mentioned that they are identifying individuals present at the party. “We have some people of interest,” he noted, indicating the investigation is ongoing.
In tribute to Rideau, friends and family held a balloon release on May 23. A GoFundMe campaign has also been started to assist her family, raising nearly $6,000 of its $10,000 goal. The campaign highlighted Rideau’s loving nature and her ambitious dreams for the future.
“McKenzie was a smart and beautiful individual with big plans,” the description reads, thanking supporters for their love and prayers during this difficult time. As the community grieves, many are calling for justice and reflecting on the tragic loss of such a bright young life.
