Derrick Harmon’s Emotional Draft Moment
PITTSBURGH — Derrick Harmon, a defensive tackle who played at Michigan State and Oregon, faced significant challenges during his college journey. When times became tough, he found strength in the example set by his mother, Tiffany Saine.
“I always thought about how I could keep pushing forward, even when I was tired or hurt,” Harmon shared. “My mom has been through so much, including brain surgery. Her resilience inspires me to keep going.”
In recent years, Tiffany battled serious health issues, undergoing multiple brain surgeries and suffering a stroke. Just as the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Harmon as the 21st overall pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, he received the heart-wrenching news that his mother was on life support.
“I got a call from Coach Mike Tomlin, and that’s when I learned she was in critical condition,” Harmon recounted. “As soon as I finish this call, I’m going to the hospital to tell her that her son got drafted.”
Tragically, Tiffany passed away just hours after Harmon achieved a dream they had both worked tirelessly towards.
The Steelers’ President, Art Rooney II, extended heartfelt condolences to Harmon and his family. “While we are excited to welcome Derrick to our team, our hearts are heavy with the loss of his mother, Tiffany,” he stated. “We will support him through this tough time and hope he finds comfort in the love from our organization and fans.”
Harmon, now 21, described his first moments as a professional athlete as bittersweet. Surrounded by family during his draft party, he couldn’t shake the feeling of sorrow over his mother’s absence, even as he felt her spirit with him.
“She fought through so much,” Harmon reflected. “Despite all the surgeries, she never gave up. She was always there for my practices and everything.”
Now, Harmon faces the challenge of moving forward, but he knows he won’t have to do it alone. “I’m very blessed to have a strong support system around me,” he said, ready to continue on the path his mother inspired.
