Tragic Loss in Las Vegas: High School Student Struck by Vehicle Near Graduation
Las Vegas police have arrested a man in connection with the tragic death of an 18-year-old high school senior, who was struck and killed by a vehicle near her school just weeks before her graduation. The incident occurred on May 2, as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) reported a crash involving a pedestrian outside Arbor View High School.
The victim has been identified by friends and family as McKenzie Scott, a senior at Arbor View. During a vigil held for her, students expressed how McKenzie always brought joy to those around her. "Every person she came in contact with was happier in her presence," one student remarked.
At approximately 11:25 a.m. local time, authorities responded to the collision at the intersection of North Buffalo Drive and Grand Teton Drive. Tragically, McKenzie succumbed to her injuries after being taken to a local hospital, while the driver was arrested at the scene.
In a statement, Metro Lt. Anthony Cavaricci acknowledged the profound sadness within the school community, noting McKenzie would not have the chance to wear her cap and gown for graduation. This incident marks a growing concern for road safety, as it represents the 59th traffic-related fatality in the area this year.
McKenzie was set to graduate 25 days after the incident and had plans to pursue a career in crime scene investigation, supported by a full-ride scholarship.
The driver, identified as 37-year-old Keenan Jackson, allegedly failed to yield the right of way and showed signs of impairment during sobriety tests. He has been charged with DUI resulting in death, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license, and his bail has been set at $500,000.
In the aftermath, students at Arbor View came together to honor McKenzie with a memorial featuring candles, flowers, and heartfelt messages. One senior expressed the community’s desire for better safety measures at the crosswalk where the accident occurred, highlighting the dangers faced by pedestrians.
School officials are mourning the loss, with the principal and district superintendent calling for community vigilance around school safety, emphasizing that protecting students is a shared responsibility.
McKenzie’s mother has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs, describing her daughter as a beacon of light and hope. The community has rallied to support her family, raising over $15,000 in just a few days.
