A young woman from Canada, only 19 years old, was found dead on a beach in Australia. The sad discovery was made early Monday morning on K’gari, an island in Queensland.
Police say they got a call about an “unresponsive” woman around 6:35 a.m. When they arrived, they found her on the beach, north of a place called Maheno Wreck. Sadly, she was already gone.
It seems the woman went for a swim around 5 a.m. Later, two people driving by saw about ten dingoes – wild dogs native to Australia – surrounding something on the beach. When they got closer, they realized it was a person.
A police inspector described the scene as “horrific” for those who found her. The woman had marks on her body that suggested dingoes had been near her, but police aren’t sure if she drowned or if the animals caused her death.
The young woman had been living on the island for about a month and a half, staying with a friend and working at a hostel. Her name hasn’t been released yet.
An examination will be done to figure out exactly how she died. Police are working hard to find answers for her family.
Officials from the Department of the Environment are helping with the investigation. They remind everyone that K’gari is a wild place, and dingoes, while important to the local people, are still wild animals.
They urge visitors to stay away from dingoes, not feed them, and let them live their lives without interference.
