A tragic incident occurred on Thursday near Naples, Italy, when a cable car carrying tourists fell after one of its cables broke, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals and leaving another critically injured.
The malfunction resulted in both the upward and downward cable cars being halted as they traveled over Monte Faito, in Castellammare di Stabia. Reports indicate that the upward cable car ultimately crashed, leading to this unfortunate loss of life and injury. Meanwhile, eight tourists, along with an operator, were safely evacuated from the cable car heading downwards, according to Naples Prefect Michele de Bari.
Castellammare Mayor Luigi Vicinanza stated, “The traction cable broke. The emergency brake downstream worked, but evidently not the one on the cabin that was entering the station.”
Rescue teams, including Italy’s alpine rescue service, firefighters, police, and civil protection, promptly responded to the scene of the accident. This incident took place just a week after the cable car, known for its breathtaking views of Mount Vesuvius and the beautiful Bay of Naples, reopened for the tourism season.
In light of this tragedy, Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed her sorrow for the victims and their families, and noted that she was in communication with the rescue teams. At the time of the incident, she was in Washington, D.C., meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
