A 38-year-old woman lost her life in a tragic explosion in Thessaloniki, Greece, on Saturday, May 3rd. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 a.m. when a bomb she was reportedly carrying detonated outside a bank.
The explosion caused damage to nearby stores and parked cars, prompting emergency responders to rush the woman to Ippokrateio Hospital, where she was later declared dead.
Authorities believe the woman intended to plant the explosive device at an ATM outside the bank when it unexpectedly went off in her hands. According to a senior police official, “It appears that she was carrying an explosive device and planned to plant it at the bank’s ATM. Something went wrong and exploded in her hands.”
Photos from the scene reveal significant damage, with several businesses suffering broken windows. Reports indicate that the woman had a criminal background and was associated with an anti-authoritarian group. This group is connected to a figure currently imprisoned for bank robberies and bombings.
In a similar incident, the same group was involved in sending a parcel bomb to the Thessaloniki Court of Appeal in February 2024, and this case is still being investigated by anti-terrorism units.
The situation is under investigation by the Organized Crime Directorate. Authorities are continuing their work to understand the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
