Shooting in Midtown Manhattan Leaves Five Dead
NEW YORK — A tragic shooting at an office building in midtown Manhattan on Monday resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, including an off-duty New York City police officer, according to multiple sources.
The suspect has been identified as Shane Tamura from Nevada, who reportedly took his own life at the scene. Officials discovered Tamura’s identification, including a concealed carry permit from Las Vegas.
Emergency services responded to reports of gunfire at the Park Avenue office building around 6:30 PM. The building is home to some of the nation’s leading financial firms, as well as the National Football League’s headquarters.
Witnesses recounted a scene of panic. Jessica Chen, who was attending a presentation on the second floor, described hearing rapid gunfire coming from the first floor. She and others quickly fled to a conference room and barricaded the door with furniture.
“We were honestly terrified,” she shared, explaining that she sent a message to her parents expressing her love for them.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed several individuals were injured and took to social media to advise those still in the building to remain where they were while police conducted searches. He also mentioned he would be visiting the hospital to support affected families.
Local news footage captured the chaos as people evacuated the building with their hands raised. The office complex also houses the Blackstone Group and the Irish consulate.
Some finance workers in a nearby office heard the commotion while picking up dinner, leading to a sudden scramble. Anna Smith described the scene as one of mass panic, as employees rushed back into their building for safety.
The shooting occurred in a bustling area of midtown, just a short walk from Grand Central Terminal and close to historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The city’s emergency management system issued warnings about traffic issues, road closures, and public transportation disruptions in the vicinity.
As of late July, New York City was experiencing a historically low number of murders and gun-related injuries, making this incident all the more shocking.
