Tragic Shootings in Kentucky Leave Two Dead and Three Injured
Two women have lost their lives and three others have been injured in a series of shootings that took place near the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, on July 13, 2025.
According to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, officers were called to respond to an incident involving a Kentucky State trooper who was shot around 11:36 a.m. on Terminal Drive. The trooper had initiated a traffic stop after receiving an alert from a license plate reader.
During the confrontation, the trooper was shot, but fortunately, he is now in stable condition and receiving medical care. Chief Weathers emphasized that the initial shooting did not happen inside the airport.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene and made his way to the Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he opened fire, injuring two men and two women. Sadly, both female victims, identified as Christina Combs, 32, and Beverly Gum, 72, were pronounced dead at the scene. One male victim is reported to be in critical condition, while another is in stable condition.
The police responded swiftly, shooting and killing the suspect at the church. Authorities believe that the suspect may have had a personal connection to the church, but they have not yet disclosed his identity, pending notification of his family.
Chief Weathers noted that the church is small, with many congregants being friends or relatives. However, he did not comment on whether any of the victims were related.
Local police temporarily closed several roads in the area for the safety of the community during the incident. The Lexington Fire Department also responded to reports of the initial shooting at Terminal Drive.
The community mourns this tragic event as they come to terms with the senseless violence that occurred.
