Tragic Dump Truck Crash Claims Four Lives in North Carolina
A serious accident involving a dump truck in North Carolina has resulted in the deaths of four people and left three others injured. Authorities have charged a 66-year-old man, Michael Ray Vernon, who allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to the tragic incident on Thursday, April 24, around 1:30 p.m.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that Vernon was driving a city-owned dump truck when he struck six utility workers performing maintenance for Carolina Power and Signalization. His vehicle collided with a bucket truck before veering off the road and ending up in a ditch.
The victims who lost their lives at the scene were identified as Douglas Garland Sides, 72, Madison Carter, 32, William Evans, 35, and Matthew Lockwood, 30. Additionally, two individuals aged 24 and 34 were airlifted to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. A 31-year-old man in the bucket truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Vernon has been charged with running a stop sign and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Authorities believe that impairment was not a contributing factor to the crash.
In a heartfelt statement, Carolina Power & Signalization expressed their sorrow over the loss of their employees, calling them "brothers" who dedicated their lives to service. They encouraged everyone to cherish their loved ones more than ever.
The company also emphasized their commitment to safety and is cooperating with law enforcement during the investigation.
Eden Mayor Neville Hall extended his condolences to the victims’ families, thanking first responders for their efforts. The North Carolina governor’s office also voiced their sympathies, emphasizing the importance of road safety.
Friends and family have shared memories of the victims. Matthew Lockwood’s friend described him as someone who was always uplifting. Lockwood, a Marine veteran who worked as a lineman, was remembered for his dedication to his job. His sister stated that he lived life to the fullest and made the most of every moment.
