Shooting at University of New Mexico Leaves One Dead, One Injured
An early morning shooting at the University of New Mexico has resulted in one death and another injury. Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the incident, although their identity, along with that of the victims, has not yet been released.
On July 25, the university informed students that the campus was still considered an active crime scene after issuing a shelter-in-place order earlier in the day.
In a message sent around 4:14 p.m. local time, the university stated: “Evacuation is not mandatory. Dorm students will be able to eat in La Posada and return to their dorm rooms. Please avoid the crime scene and follow the directions of officers on site.”
The suspect was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Los Lunas later that afternoon. The shooting occurred around 3:00 a.m. at the Casas del Rio student housing complex, as reported by the UNM Police Department.
Students reported hearing several gunshots before taking shelter. One student, Jubilee Tasi, who was watching a movie with friends at the time, recounted, “I just heard like three loud pops and then saw people running around.”
Tasi expressed feeling unsettled about the incident, saying, “What happened last night is just crazy, cause I mean, I’m still trying to get used to the environment over here.”
University President Garnett Stokes communicated via social media, confirming that multiple shots were fired and detailing the unfortunate outcome—one person deceased and another injured, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
School officials continue to encourage students and staff to stay updated through university communications, and multiple law enforcement agencies remain on site, actively investigating the situation.
