One Trader Joe’s customer has taken an unusual approach with her carton of eggs—she decided to incubate them instead of cooking them. The exciting result? Eight adorable baby chicks that captured the attention of many on TikTok.
In a viral video shared on her account, @thecaliforniahome, the woman showcased her journey. The clip began with a view of the fertile, cage-free eggs still in their Trader Joe’s packaging, with a caption stating, “24 days ago, we bought these eggs.”
She explained that her family placed the eggs in an incubator for 21 days. The video included heartwarming moments of her children eagerly checking on the eggs and the incubator. Eventually, they were rewarded with the sight of the chicks hatching—one clip showed the newly hatched chicks starting to explore their surroundings.
“Now we have eight chicks!” she exclaimed in a later part of the video as her son played with the fluffy little birds on their green lawn. She ended her video on a lighthearted note, showcasing the chicks in a makeshift coop and cheering, “No egg shortage here!”
Despite the cute moments, not all reactions were positive. Some TikTok users expressed their discomfort in the comments, with one saying, “Now I can’t eat eggs,” and another adding, “Stop, I’m literally never going to eat eggs again.” Others questioned why Trader Joe’s was selling fertilized eggs.
However, experts clarify that consuming fertilized eggs is completely safe. Trader Joe’s and various agriculture sources confirm that there is no taste difference between fertilized and unfertilized eggs, and they can be prepared in the same way. A representative from Trader Joe’s has yet to provide any additional comments on the situation.
