Country Singer Tracy Lawrence Reflects on Surviving Violent Crime
Country music star Tracy Lawrence is opening up about a traumatic event from his past and how it shaped his views on faith and mental health.
In 1991, while working on his first album, Lawrence was the victim of a violent mugging in Nashville. He was shot multiple times and had to undergo surgery.
Looking back, Lawrence believes he should have sought counseling to deal with the emotional aftermath of the shooting. He admits he was angry and felt like the criminals were trying to steal his opportunity. He now understands the importance of addressing mental health, especially after experiencing trauma.
Lawrence says he suppressed his feelings at the time, which caused problems in his relationships and career. He also says he developed a “God complex” after surviving the ordeal, leading him to take unnecessary risks.
The singer hopes his story will encourage others who have experienced trauma to seek help and talk about their feelings. He spent several days in the hospital and worried about whether he would lose his leg. While doctors were able to save his leg, he has continued to experience physical issues related to the shooting.
Despite the challenges, Lawrence is grateful for his successful career and the support of his fans. He credits his faith and the prayers of his loved ones for helping him through difficult times. Lawrence is a strong believer in God.
Lawrence, who is about to embark on his 2026 “No Alibis Tour,” wants to reconnect with fans and share his music with audiences across the country. He believes it’s a good time to get back on the road and share his love of music.
