Tim Gunn has confirmed he will not return to the upcoming season of Project Runway, despite initial discussions about his involvement. In a recent interview, he shared details about the situation with his longtime co-host Heidi Klum, who reached out to him months ago about the revival of the show after both of them had previously left in 2018.
Gunn narrated how Klum messaged him, saying there were talks of bringing them back together for a new season. His excitement was evident as he expressed, “Of course, there’s not a moment of hesitation in me.” However, as discussions progressed, he discovered that he hadn’t received any contract offers. His agent informed him that the producers of the show did not want him back, even after his history with the program was considered.
Initially, the producers offered Gunn a small cameo in one episode, which he deemed insufficient. He humorously expressed his disappointment, discussing how he would prefer not to merely "wave from a bus" rather than participate in the show fully. Ultimately, he decided to decline the offer and stated, “as Heidi would say, you’re either in or you’re out. And I’m out.”
Upon hearing the news, Gunn described feeling "devastated" and "humiliated." However, he later shifted his outlook, reflecting on the memorable experiences he had during his two decades in the industry. He realized it was pointless to dwell on the disappointment, recognizing that everything happens for a reason, even if the reason isn’t clear yet.
Klum was saddened by the news as well, reassuring Gunn that she was advocating for him. He comforted her, saying, "Just take good care of yourself. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine," showing their strong bond despite the situation.
While Gunn won’t be appearing on Project Runway, he plans to watch the show and support Klum from afar. He expressed his loyalty to her and mentioned, “I have her back and I’m with her in spirit always.”
Project Runway will be returning with its 21st season, featuring weekly episodes, though details about the judges and premiere date are still under wraps. The show has seen various changes in leadership since Gunn and Klum’s departure, and it will now air on Freeform, Disney+, and Hulu after previously moving between networks.
As fans await the new season, the legacy left by Gunn and Klum on the fashion competition remains a significant part of the show’s history. Their impact and connection to the franchise are sure to be remembered fondly.
