Clemson Triumphs Over Charleston Southern in Season Opener, 91-64
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson University men’s basketball team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a strong start, defeating Charleston Southern 91-64 at Littlejohn Coliseum on Monday night.
The Tigers (1-0) showcased their talent, with Chase Hunter from Atlanta leading the way by scoring 17 points. Hunter made a significant impact toward the end of the first half, hitting three consecutive three-pointers that helped the Tigers take a commanding 48-24 lead at halftime.
Myles Foster also made his mark, matching Hunter’s 17 points off the bench, along with four rebounds and two blocks. The Tigers’ bench played a vital role in the win, contributing a total of 40 points, including nine from Jake Heidbreder’s three three-pointers.
Viktor Lakhin added to the scoring with 12 points, while Ian Schieffelin finished just shy of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Chauncey Wiggins also contributed four rebounds and eight points in the game.
Head Coach Brad Brownell emphasized a stronger defensive strategy this season, and it showed as the Tigers recorded nine steals, matching a season-high from the last year.
Clemson outperformed Charleston Southern on the boards, grabbing 40 rebounds compared to their opponent’s 34. Schieffelin led the team in rebounds, while both Hunter and Lakhin had five each. Jaeden Zackery played a key role defensively, contributing six points and leading the team with three steals.
The Tigers took control late in the first half, outscoring Charleston Southern 28-10 in the last 8:30 to widen their lead by the break. Clemson maintained their momentum into the second half, leading by as many as 36 points before securing the 91-64 win.
Looking ahead, Clemson will return to Littlejohn Coliseum on Friday, November 8, to face Saint Francis at 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
