Unique Films Set to Premiere at Toronto International Film Festival
The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is gearing up for its 50th edition, with exciting new films announced to premiere. Leading the lineup are performances from well-known actors like Sydney Sweeney, Angelina Jolie, and Aziz Ansari.
One highlight is Ansari’s film “Good Fortune,” featuring Keanu Reeves in a unique role as an angel guiding a struggling character played by Ansari itself. Another noteworthy entry is “Christy,” directed by David Michôd, where Sweeney portrays the famous boxer Christy Martin. Additionally, in “Couture,” directed by Alice Winocour, Jolie takes center stage as an American filmmaker at Paris Fashion Week.
Among other anticipated films is Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” which continues a beloved series that has previously debuted at TIFF.
The festival will also showcase fresh works from a variety of directors, including “Roofman” by Derek Cianfrance, featuring Channing Tatum as a father who strays into crime to make ends meet. Nia DaCosta brings her adaptation of “Hedda” to the festival, starring Tessa Thompson, while Ralph Fiennes stars in Nicholas Hytner’s WWI drama “The Choral.”
Highlights also include Steven Soderbergh’s third film of 2025, “The Christophers,” and Brendan Fraser’s role in “Rental Family,” which follows an American actor in Japan. Paul Greengrass’ “The Lost Bus” features Matthew McConaughey as a bus driver facing challenges during the 2018 Camp Fire in California.
Kicking off on September 4, TIFF will begin with the documentary “John Candy: I Like Me,” directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, and will run until September 14.
Toronto has a reputation as a significant launchpad for new films, although many high-profile movies first appear at festivals like Venice and Telluride. This year, films such as “Hamnet” from Chloe Zhao, “Frankenstein” by Guillermo del Toro, and others are likely to make their first appearances at those events.
Other notable films to watch for at TIFF include James Vanderbilt’s drama “Nuremberg,” starring Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, and a film based on Bumble’s founder, featuring Lily James.
The festival will also see first-time directorial features from Brian Cox and Maude Apatow, among others. Popular films from May’s Cannes Film Festival, such as Jafar Panahi’s award-winning “It Was Just an Accident,” will also be part of the Toronto lineup.
As TIFF approaches, film lovers everywhere are eager to see what new stories unfold on the big screen.
