Oklahoma City continues to impress in the playoffs, as they secured a commanding victory over the Memphis Grizzlies with a score of 118-99, putting them ahead 2-0 in their first-round series. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the charge with 27 points, showing a strong performance after a slow start in the previous game.
The Thunder came out ready to play, initiating the game with a 9-0 run and leaving the Grizzlies unable to find the basket during the first few minutes. At the end of the first quarter, Oklahoma City had a comfortable 32-17 lead and never looked back from there.
Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the importance of respecting all opponents, noting, “They’re a very good team. They wouldn’t be here if they weren’t.” He highlighted the team’s focus on starting strong and setting the tone for the night.
Alongside Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams contributed 24 points, while Chet Holmgren recorded 20 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks, showcasing the team’s depth and talent. Despite Gilgeous-Alexander’s shooting struggles, the entire roster played with confidence, which Coach Mark Daigneault appreciated. He remarked that different players stepping up on various nights is crucial for their success.
The Thunder have been dominant against the Grizzlies all season, winning all six matchups by double digits. Memphis did see some good performances as Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 26 points and Ja Morant added 23, but they will need to rethink their strategy to be more competitive.
Gilgeous-Alexander found his rhythm in the second quarter, helping extend Oklahoma City’s lead. By halftime, the Thunder had set a playoff record with 12 three-pointers and led 70-52.
Although Memphis managed to trim the lead early in the third quarter, Oklahoma City maintained control heading into the final quarter, leading 90-79. Memphis interim coach Tuomas Iisalo acknowledged the need to maintain high energy for all 48 minutes against such a strong team.
The Thunder finished strong, holding the Grizzlies scoreless for nearly four minutes in the fourth quarter. This marked another game in which Memphis struggled offensively, failing to reach 100 points for the second consecutive match.
As the series shifts back to Memphis for Game 3, the Thunder aim to continue their impressive playoff run.
