A Mexican Navy plane crashed near Galveston, Texas, on Monday, resulting in the loss of at least five lives. The aircraft was carrying a young patient, along with seven other individuals.
According to the Mexican Navy, four of those on board were Navy officers, while the remaining four were civilians, including a child. Two passengers were associated with a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting Mexican children suffering from severe burns, often arranging transports to a Galveston hospital.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Luke Baker confirmed at least five fatalities but did not release the identities of the deceased. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
The crash occurred in Galveston Bay, close to the causeway connecting Galveston Island to the mainland. Emergency services and search teams were quickly dispatched to the site, located near the popular beach destination approximately 50 miles southeast of Houston.
Sky Decker, a local yacht captain, played a role in the rescue efforts, pulling a woman from the wreckage.
Mexico’s Navy has expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The Michou and Mau Foundation, involved in the medical mission, also shared their solidarity with the affected families.
Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board teams are on the scene to investigate the crash.
