Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated an investigation into over 100 potential noncitizens who are believed to have cast at least 200 ballots during the 2020 and 2022 elections. Most of the suspected illegal voting took place in Harris County, but Paxton’s office is also looking into reports from Guadalupe, Cameron, and Eastland counties.
This investigation was made possible by an executive order from former President Donald Trump, which directed the Department of Homeland Security to share voter data with state agencies.
In a recent statement, Paxton emphasized the importance of ensuring that only U.S. citizens vote in Texas elections. He stated, “Illegal aliens and foreign nationals must not be allowed to influence Texas elections by casting illegal ballots with impunity. I will not allow it to continue.”
Paxton, who is currently running for the Senate, vowed to hold any noncitizen who illegally votes accountable for their actions. He noted that the investigation is vital to protecting the integrity of elections in Texas.
Previously, in June, Paxton opened an inquiry into an additional 33 individuals suspected of voting illegally in the most recent general election. His message to those who might think they can vote illegally is clear: face the full consequences of the law.
This crackdown on illegal voting aligns with recent actions by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who announced the removal of 1.1 million names from the state’s voter rolls in 2024, further demonstrating Texas’s commitment to election integrity.
As lawmakers in Texas work to ensure honest and fair elections, the emphasis on accountability stands firm among state officials and may resonate with concerned voters looking to strengthen democracy.
