In a stunning turn of events, heavy rains fell rapidly in Kerrville, Texas, leading to a catastrophic flood that has claimed the lives of 24 individuals and left many missing, including over 20 girls from a nearby summer camp. The Texas Hill Country experienced an overwhelming 10 inches of rain in just a few hours. This sudden downpour caused the Guadalupe River to overflow, leading to dangerous flash floods. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha reported the tragic loss of life and confirmed that approximately 237 people had already been rescued, with airlifting being the primary method for evacuating those in peril.
The girls missing were part of Camp Mystic, a well-regarded Christian camp situated along the Guadalupe River. One camper, Elinor Lester, described the frightening moments when her cabin was awoken by the storm, forcing the girls to be airlifted to safety. “The camp was completely destroyed,” she recalled. “It was really scary.”
As rescue efforts became increasingly urgent, authorities noted that the situation remained fluid, with the death toll likely to change as they continued to search for those unaccounted for. Efforts were complicated by rapidly rising water levels; a river gauge in Hunt recorded a swift rise of 22 feet in just two hours.

Ingram resident Erin Burgess recounted her family’s narrow escape. After hearing the storm, she and her son found refuge in a tree while they awaited the water’s receding to safety. Thankfully, they were all ultimately accounted for.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this disaster, officials emphasize the importance of being prepared for floods, especially in an area marked by such unpredictable weather patterns. Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly acknowledged the challenges of warning systems in place, stating that there was no way to foresee such a sudden and severe flood event.
Local leaders, including Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, confirmed substantial resources were deployed, with approximately 400 people involved in the rescue effort, utilizing helicopters, drones, and numerous rescue teams.
