A teenager has been sentenced for the tragic stabbing death of a 15-year-old girl in England. Hassan Sentamu, now 17, was handed a prison term of at least 23 years following the fatal incident involving Elianne Andam on September 27, 2023.
The court heard that the conflict began after Sentamu, who had just broken up with Andam’s friend, encountered the girls at a shopping center in Croydon, south London. Feeling provoked, he told a friend he couldn’t “let this slide.” He arranged to meet both Elianne and his ex-girlfriend the following day to return some personal items, but he arrived without them.
In a twist of events, Elianne approached Sentamu, taking back the bag of items that had just been returned. Angered, Sentamu chased her down and pulled out a knife, stabbing her multiple times, including a fatal wound to her neck. Eyewitnesses rushed to help her until emergency services arrived, but sadly, she died at the scene.
Sentamu fled but was apprehended by police shortly after the attack. During the courtroom proceedings, Elianne’s father spoke about the profound pain and guilt he feels, imagining his daughter’s last moments. He expressed how heart-wrenching it is to think he could not protect her during such a horrific event.
Alongside his murder sentence, Sentamu received an additional year for unlawfully possessing a knife. The court also noted his troubled background, which included previous incidents of violence and difficulties in understanding his emotions and the feelings of those around him. The judge remarked that Sentamu has not yet fully developed the emotional resilience to handle strong feelings, providing some context for his actions.
The judge concluded by emphasizing that Sentamu will carry the responsibility for Elianne’s death for the rest of his life. His sentence reflects the severity of the crime, ensuring he will spend significant time in custody.
