A 19-year-old has been charged in Western Australia after allegedly attacking his father with a samurai sword, resulting in severe injuries. The incident took place outside their home in the suburb of Piccadilly in Kalgoorlie.
Jaxon Jai Trinidad appeared in court on February 21 following the violence that occurred two days earlier. According to reports, his father, James Nybo, 40, had been sending threatening text messages and confronted Trinidad while brandishing a baseball bat.
During the altercation, Trinidad is accused of using the samurai sword to sever his father’s arm, which was left on the road. When authorities arrived, Nybo was in critical condition and was rushed to Kalgoorlie Hospital before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital for emergency surgery. So far, efforts to reattach his arm have not succeeded.
Trinidad faces several charges, including aggravated grievous bodily harm and possession of a weapon. He did not enter a plea in court and only confirmed his identity. The magistrate denied bail and noted that Trinidad had no prior criminal record.
After the incident, Trinidad allegedly fled the scene but later turned himself in to the police at an abandoned railway yard. Initially providing a false alibi, he later claimed he acted in self-defense.
Magistrate William Yoo indicated that if the case proceeds to trial, Trinidad could spend over a year in custody. He also mentioned that while self-defense could be a factor in the case, it would ultimately be up to a jury to decide. Trinidad is scheduled to return to court on March 14.
