A man from Colorado has received a significant prison sentence for his involvement in the tragic death of a young woman. Nicholas Karol-Chik, 20, was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, as well as attempted murder and related charges.
Karol-Chik’s charges relate to the death of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell, who tragically lost her life on April 19, 2023. She was struck by a large rock thrown through her car’s window.
As part of a plea agreement with the prosecutors, Karol-Chik agreed to testify against his co-defendant, Joseph Koenig, receiving a lighter sentence in return. During the trial, he testified twice to meet the conditions of his deal.
In court, the judge confirmed that Karol-Chik would serve 45 years for the murder and an additional 24 years for attempted murder. However, both sentences will be served concurrently, leaving him with a total of 45 years in prison, followed by parole.
During the hearing, Karol-Chik expressed remorse, stating that his need to impress friends led to a tragic outcome. He also reached out to Bartell’s family, hoping that they might someday find it in their hearts to forgive him.
The victim’s mother described how the young men involved spent their evening laughing and seeking destruction before the incident, asking the judge for a harsh sentence. The deputy district attorney highlighted the seriousness of the crime, emphasizing that a severe punishment was warranted.
Karol-Chik admitted in court that he provided the rock that caused Bartell’s death, and he, along with his accomplices, even took photographs of the scene without checking on her condition. Koenig, who threw the fatal rock, was recently convicted of first-degree murder and faces life in prison without parole.
