A young man died after being shot by a deputy in California, police say.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the shooting happened around 8:40 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, in a shopping area on Fallbrook Avenue in West Hills.
Sheriff’s Department detectives saw what they believed was an armed robbery happening. They tried to stop the robbery and protect a woman who was the victim, and that’s when a deputy shot the man.
The man died at the scene. Officials haven’t said his name or age, or the name of the deputy involved.
Police say a woman who was with the man ran away in a car, but they found her later in Agoura Hills. They also found a loaded gun where the man died.
A woman told KTLA that the man who was killed was her 18-year-old grandson. She said she doesn’t know what happened and that he had just stayed with her the night before.
The man’s mother also spoke to KTLA, saying she couldn’t believe her son would do something like this. She said he comes from a good family and graduated from high school last year.
Authorities are looking into whether this incident is connected to other recent robberies and an assault in the area. They ask anyone with information to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
