Milan Fashion Week concluded on a high note this past Sunday, showcasing a vibrant collection from emerging designer Susan Fang. Her latest line featured enchanting designs displayed beneath a stunning arch of colorful flowers, captivating the audience and paying homage to cultural traditions.
Fang drew inspiration from her mother’s joyful memories of growing up in rural China, incorporating scenic elements that mirror her mother’s artwork. “We wanted to embrace how culture is passed down to us, whether it’s personal or through art,” Fang shared backstage, following her recognition by renowned designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
The collection was prominent in its portrayal of nature, with outerwear depicting idyllic landscapes filled with images of cherry blossoms set against bright blue skies and flowing streams. Her dresses, designed from vibrant layers of fabric reminiscent of a rainbow cake, embodied what Fang described as “a bouncy feeling of happiness.”
Since launching her brand in 2017 after graduating from Central Saint Martins, Fang has made creativity and material experimentation the cornerstones of her designs. The lineup also featured a striking sculptural dress made of beaded flowers on a 3-D form, showcasing her innovative spirit.
Collaborating with the artisans from Dolce & Gabbana allowed Fang to explore new materials, such as denim and sequins, while honing her tailoring skills. These partnerships are vital for emerging designers, offering opportunities to expand their techniques and reach within the fashion industry.
