New York City Welcomes New Mayor with Traditional Ceremony
Zohran Mamdani is set to be sworn in as the new Mayor of New York City as the new year begins.
The new Mayor’s team has planned two ceremonies, a smaller, private event with his family in a historic subway station at midnight, followed by a public celebration at City Hall.
The midnight oath-taking will occur at the old City Hall subway station, a landmark of the city’s original subway system, known for its architecture. The Mayor’s team said that the location showed his dedication to the working people.
Following that Attorney General Letitia James, will administer the oath of office.
Later in the day, a public ceremony will be held at City Hall, including a block party for the public. Senator Bernie Sanders will administer the oath of office at this event.
Mamdani will be sworn in with his hand on Qurans at both ceremonies.
The inaugural committee includes figures from the arts and business, reflecting the city’s diversity. The public swearing-in will feature performances, music, and elements from different faiths.
Officials have also clarified that Mamdani is actually the 112th mayor of New York, correcting a historical record.
Mamdani has spent recent weeks finalizing his administration, announcing key appointments.
