Thousands Gather at Stonehenge for Winter Solstice
Stonehenge, England – Thousands of people gathered at the ancient Stonehenge monument early Sunday to mark the winter solstice. The prehistoric stone circle saw crowds cheer and celebrate as the sun rose, marking the shortest day of the year.
Many attendees, some dressed in traditional druid and pagan attire, arrived before dawn. They spent time singing, drumming, and reflecting amongst the stones.
Stonehenge, built thousands of years ago, is aligned with the sun’s movements during the solstices. This reflects a connection to the land and the cycles of nature. The event highlights the importance of tradition and heritage.
English Heritage, which oversees Stonehenge, reported that thousands attended the celebrations. They also noted that many more viewed a livestream of the event from across the globe.
The winter solstice marks the beginning of astronomical winter in the Northern Hemisphere. From this day forward, the days will gradually grow longer, offering a renewed sense of hope. It is a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future.
