Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – The Winter Olympics began Wednesday with curling matches. However, a brief power problem caused a short pause in the games.
The curling matches started two days before the main opening event. American curler Korey Dropkin is looking forward to the competition.
“Being with the best is a great thing,” Dropkin said. “We want to be ready and give it our all on the ice.”
Fans came to Cortina to watch the first games. They cheered for their countries and favorite players. Bernard Benoit, a fan from Canada, traveled to see the games before meeting his daughter. He enjoys curling because it mixes being active and thinking smart.
Married couples and siblings are among the teams. Marie Kaldvee and Harri Lill are the first from Estonia to curl in the Olympics.
Stephanie Kahn, a volunteer, wants to learn about curling. She once wanted to swim in the Olympics.
“Being an athlete and working hard to be the best is special,” she said. “I am happy to be around these athletes.”
