During a recent episode of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith expressed strong criticism of the Democratic Party. He suggested that the Democrats appeared to be a less appealing option than President Trump, despite his controversial history.
In a discussion with Congressman Ro Khanna from California, Smith highlighted that the Democrats missed the mark by not addressing the pressing issues that concern the American public. He noted that Trump, with all his legal challenges, still managed to resonate with voters because he campaigned on the topics they cared about.
Smith pointed out, “The man was impeached twice and convicted on 34 felony counts, yet the American people still viewed him as more ‘normal’ compared to what they see on the left.” Maher agreed, emphasizing Smith’s point about the perception of normalcy.
Since Trump’s election victory, Smith has been vocal about the left’s failures that led to that outcome. He stated that the recent election results reflected a clear message from America: dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s direction. In a previous interview, he remarked that the public wanted no part of the Democrats’ agenda.
In the latest episode, Smith reiterated that the Democrats’ focus on niche issues rather than significant concerns, like the economy and border security, played a crucial role in Trump’s ascendance. He described that, even though Trump made promises that might be difficult to keep, he has made an effort to follow through on his commitments.
Smith contrasted Trump’s actions with the Democratic Party’s. He questioned what specific promises the left had delivered on and whether they genuinely connected with voters. “What voter can now look at the Democratic Party and say, ‘There’s someone fighting for us’?” he asked, before concluding that this disconnect is why Trump sits in the Oval Office.
