Dallas Stars Part Ways with Coach Pete DeBoer After Western Conference Finals Exit
The Dallas Stars have decided to part ways with head coach Pete DeBoer following a challenging season. The announcement came after the Stars were eliminated in five games by the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference finals. This marked the third consecutive season that the team had reached this stage under DeBoer’s leadership.
During the recent playoffs, the Stars had home-ice advantage but struggled against the Oilers. In a pivotal Game 5, DeBoer faced criticism for his decision to bench goaltender Jake Oettinger after he allowed two quick goals within the first seven minutes of play. The coach later acknowledged that he had not discussed this decision with Oettinger beforehand.
Reflecting on the situation, DeBoer mentioned, “If you look at last year’s playoffs, we’ve lost six of seven games to Edmonton. We allowed two goals on two shots in an elimination game. It was partly an attempt to spark our team and partly because the current approach hadn’t been effective.”
His tenure with the team concluded with a record of 149 wins, 68 losses, and 29 overtime losses over three seasons. With one year remaining on his contract, the decision to let DeBoer go signals a shift in strategy for the Stars as they aim to capture the coveted Stanley Cup.
General Manager Jim Nill explained the reasoning behind this decision, stating, “After careful consideration, we believe that a new voice is needed in our locker room to push us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup. We’d like to thank Pete for everything he has helped our organization achieve over the past three seasons and wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
Under DeBoer’s guidance, the Stars made several significant moves to strengthen their championship aspirations. Notably, the team acquired forward Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes in March, a trade that involved several key assets, including forward Logan Stankoven and multiple conditional draft picks. Rantanen performed impressively during the 2025 playoffs, tallying nine goals and 13 assists, leading to an eight-year, $96 million contract extension.
DeBoer’s coaching career has been marked by success, as he has guided three different teams to the conference finals over the last seven seasons. Earlier, he took the Vegas Golden Knights to this stage in 2020 and led the San Jose Sharks in 2019. At 56 years old, he now leaves the Stars with a solid record and invaluable playoff experience.
The decision to move on from DeBoer does not come lightly, especially considering the success he brought to the franchise during his tenure. The coaching change indicates Dallas’s commitment to pursuing a championship while reflecting on the past few seasons’ achievements.
As the Stars look ahead, they will be on the hunt for a new head coach who can steer the team to the next level. The choice will be crucial in shaping their future, especially as they seek to strengthen their lineup and strategy heading into the next season.
The Stars’ front office and fanbase are hopeful that the new coach will inspire the team to overcome recent playoff challenges. With talented players like Rantanen stepping into leadership roles, there is optimism for what lies ahead.
Dallas remains committed to building a competitive team capable of navigating the difficulties of playoff hockey. As the offseason unfolds, they will assess their options, focusing on the right direction to achieve long-term success.
The Stars franchise emphasizes its dedication to fans and the community, aiming to deliver a winning culture on and off the ice. With strategic decisions on the horizon, Dallas hopes for a rejuvenated team ready to chase the ultimate prize: the Stanley Cup.
